Chapel converted into a space for reflection and experience

The meaning of the ‘chapel of efflorescence’ is closely-knit with the rich history of the woody area of 7 to 8 ha in the outskirts of Groot-Bijgaarden. Going back to the 12th century, and a glorious existence as an abbey in the 16th century, the site became a place of education for the Brothers of the Christian Schools at the end of the 19th century. The site is currently in the hands of private owners, while a certain number of education-related functions are guaranteed: a primary school and the administrative building with chapel (managed by the Flemish Lasallian Perspective).

The renovation of the chapel grew from the fi nding that many sacral spaces in schools disappear or are put to a new use (as a depot, as a meeting hall, ...) but schools are nonetheless searching for ways to give meaning to life in a contemporary manner. Often multifunctional or polyvalent rooms are used for this purpose, but they lack the atmosphere of security, serenity and spirituality.

With respect for the past and the patrimony, the design wants to herald a new era. The old gives a ‘present to the new’. The ‘new’ chapel offers young people today a space for security, contemplation and refl ection. In this project, not just the final result is exemplary, but also the cooperation between architect and client stands out. The good commissioning and the ‘click’ with the architect were key to success: together, they embarked on an intensive process of collaboration to get the brief and design right. This took time: different thinking and working sessions underlie this concept, concerning both content and architecture.

The result is a highly sensory space that intends to stir and incite visitors of all ages in the direction of discovery and spirituality. An transitional space, where it is possible to take off one’s shoes, is part of the overall experience. From there, one enters the chapel itself with atmosphere of austere and serene receptivity. The sand, on the red concrete floor with underfloor heating, provides an ‘earthly’ and warm feeling. The shutters, which can be opened like the pages of a book, arouse curiosity and bring about a layered use. Through this ‘openings’ past and future are shown: the apse, the stainedglass windows, the murals, the green environment... The felt on the walls and the stretch ceiling bring about a pleasant, warm atmosphere. The lighting possibilities also contribute to the diverse possibilities to experience the room (bright lights, dimmed, directional ...). The indirect reference to sacral elements is pursued in the details (white surfaces with fine red lines, a large lamp, wooden benches ...).

This fi ne example of sacral architecture illustrates how architecture can rouse a richness of experience. The space in itself is expressive and inspiring, but in order to make the most of its potential, the underlying vision must also be kept alive in its use.
