Passive complex of schools for integrated education

This project is a perfect example rational use of space, because it combines a large number of related functions on a single site in a green environment. The school complex comprises a primary school, a school for the disabled, a childcare centre, a restaurant, administrative rooms and a sports hall. The council was aware of the need for sports infrastructure on the school site, but the sports hall was sited in such a way that it has separate access and can easily be used after school hours. There was also intensive cooperation with higher authorities to build a school for disabled children on the same site.

The whole school complex has been made accessible for wheelchair users, which means that it is possible to offer inclusive education. The school consists of a number of low free-standing buildings which are located along a central axis on the sloping site. With regard to general mobility, the school complex focuses mainly on pedestrians and cyclists. The site is only accessible to one-way traffic for cars and buses along one entrance and one exit.

The council aims to present itself as a sustainable council and is aware that the public sector should serve as a role model in this respect. In addition to ecological criteria, the human scale and the way in which the school fits in the landscape are also important conditions for sustainability. All the school buildings have been built in a solid fashion so that full use can be made of the thermal inertia, and they comply with the passive house standard. The sports hall consists of a light structure and meets the low energy concept because of its southern orientation. The school complex uses wood pellets for the additional heating for the school because this is a renewable energy source with low CO2 emissions. The materials were also selected as ecologically as possible on the basis of local sources, the production processes and the rational use of primary materials.

The walls contain 24 cm of insulation material instead of the usual 6-10 cm. The roof even has 32 cm of insulation. The windows have thermal triple glazing and the building was made completely windproof. As cooling a building in summer requires even more energy than heating in winter, the ventilation is provided by means of ground source heat exchange. The use of artificial light is adjusted depending on daylight conditions.

In the project brief, the school formulated the demands in consultation with the pupils. The children also contributed to the creation of the school grounds and the design of the playground on the basis of models.
