'De Vlinder' Special Education Tielt

Geert Govaert, principal GLS Tielt

When they enter our new school, they always say it's nice and lovely here. The children like it too when they arrive here.

What's special about our school is the open structure. As soon as you enter, you see the open spaces, you see the wood. It radiates stability and openness. You see these features everywhere and that makes it special, I think.

Gino Debruyne, architect

We've got classrooms and therapy rooms and on a limited surface we made sure that the school was developed around a courtyard to give the building an identity. That way we clearly show that the class belongs together. Children have a clear view in and around the classrooms and on the playground. The hall is obviously wider. When you come in, you clearly feel that the corridor twines itself around the courtyard like a snake.

A very nice feature is this corridor. I've seen this in a company. All rooms are connected with sliding doors. When you open all the doors, you get a corridor. It's very easy to get from the teachers' room to the secretary's office or mine.

We were lucky we could build next to a school that built a new cafeteria and a new gym the year before. That allowed us to use some additional space in our school concept and in rooms we couldn't have built otherwise.

Two or more schools cooperating is a good thing. You can save money and it allows people from different schools to work together. In the past we've organized our sporting afternoons on the same day. That way you can integrate special needs children and children in normal schools.
